"...and now, the skills of the webmaster and the talents of the censor won't let us relive Great Moments with Mr. Lincoln."

I got a little curious about what can and cannot be said in Disney's online Virtual Magic Kingdom. So I went to the virtual town square, stood beside the virtual cannon and under the virtual American flag, and attempted to type in the script from the Great Moments with Mr. Lincoln show, which, at the non-virtual Disneyland, was pretty near that spot. The words in red were censored.

The world has never had a good definition of the word liberty and the American people, just now, are much in want of one. We all declare for liberty; but in using the same word we do not all mean the same thing.

What constitutes the bulwark of our liberty and independence? It is not our frowning battlements, our bristling seacoasts. These are not our reliance against tyranny. Our reliance is in the love of liberty that God has planted in our bosums. Our defense is in the preservation of the spirit which prizes liberty as the heritage of all men, in all lands, everywhere. Destroy this spirit, and you have planted the seeds of despotism around your own doors.

At what point shall we expect the approach of danger? By what means shall we fortify against it? Shall we expect some trans-Atlantic military giant to step the ocean, and crush us at a blow?

Never!

All the armies of Europe, Asia and Africa combined
could not by force, take a drink from the Ohio, or make a track on the Blue Ridge, in a trial of a thousand years.

At what point then is the approach of danger to be expected?

I answer, if it ever reach us, it must spring up amongst us. It cannot come from abroad. If destruction be our lot, we ourselves must be its authors and finishers. As a nation of free men, we must live through all times, or die by suicide.

Let reverence for the law be breathed by every American mother, to the lisping babe that prattles on her lap. Let it be taught in the schools, in the seminaries, and in the colleges. Let it be written in primers, in spelling books and almanacs. Let it be preached from the pulpit, proclaimed in legislative halls, and enforced in courts of justice. And in short, let it become the political religion of the nation. And let the old and the young, the rich and the poor, the grave and the gay, of all sexes, and tongues and colors and conditions, sacrifice unceasingly at its altars.

And let us strive to deserve, as far as mortals may, the continued care of divine providence, trusting that, in future national emergencies, He will not fail to provide us the instruments of safety and security.

Neither let us be slandered from our duty by false accusations against us, nor frightened from it by the menaces of destruction to the Government nor of dungeons to ourselves.

Let us have faith that right makes might, and in that faith, let us, to the end, dare to do our duty as we understand it.

Comments:
I don't get it. Why were these words censored?

tyranny, destruction, frightened, sexes, altars, OHIO?
Certainly these horrid, evil things deserve to be censored, lest the littleones learn of it.

But seriously OHIO?

I assume that the place names (and possibly some other words, such as "one") are censored to prevent children from giving out their address.

Well, I didn't expect "...the grave and the gay, of all sexes, and tongues..." to get past the censor, but I was surprised at how little you can say.

Oh my.... you said "one"!

It looks like they might be using an inclusion list of allowed words, rather than an exclusion list of banned words. The inclusion list would probably hold several thousand commonly used words that have passed their approval for a junior audience. This would explain why most of the harmless-but-not-commonly-used words are banned.

It is probably also an attempt to get around the 1337 5p33k used in many online chat areas these days.

If they are using an inclusion list, they have a very small dictionary. I mean, my cell phone probably knows every one of those words, including Ohio.

It is an inclusion list and a very small one. No censoring going on, they just started with a small list to keep kids from sending their addresses to adults and probably have not revisited the list.

I recall not being able to say 'tree' as in 'I love my Haunted Mansion tree' Maybe because they feel tree would be used in place of three. Who knows?

Man? Word? American? Taught? Schools? but "destroy" is ok...

well, I hope they had the sense to disallow "I" and other roman numerals.

You can recommend words to the VMK staff so they add it to the bank of accepted words. Maybe they would accept some of them...?

This speech has always brought a tear to my eye. I haven't seen Mr. L at Disneyland for years, but hope he is still there to enjoy on the next trip.

We certainly are not now the America he spoke of when this was first written.

I, too, was astonished at the things that CAN NOT be said at VMK, but the inclusion list theory makes a lot of sense. That speech is also among my favorites!

I too was supriswed when i first entered VMK by the name of playerkat. I met some friends, and found out that other children have been dating on the website. I was there, and one boy there asked me out. In case someone playing this is confused, being taken means that you have a friend on this website that you are dating. I responded, I Do Not Play That Way

amd left. If you would please reply, thx

well, playerkat, this was to say that some people here were suprised on the language. When i saw your comment, i was suprised also. These children need to get thier heads on straight.thankyou,

hey you dont let us say old mom
dad rhings more then twice let us say bad words if you dont you will be hearing from my lawmaker

we should do something

the reason the censor those words is because they dont want to make it seem that they are loyal to one party, such as when people say one, they can give out their phone number and address. Vynce, they didnt sensor I beacause it is usually used as a way of personal expression. However, since you have let this page go, Vmk has allowed many more words. They blank out suicide because they dont want children discussing it on their website. this is a game on the internet, not a free for all cuss it out. Dsney has created this to get more people at their parks. heritage is censores, and continents are to. I think that to type this in, originally sounded sart, but you are in turn, discussing things our children do not need to hear. *they can now say tree* and on and too, that is how my kids tell their friends how many, oh ice cubes they want to trade for. There are short cuts to these words. I think that few words should be banned that they have.
